Michigan Storefront Benchmark — Vol. 1 · audited 28 Sep 2026

Twenty-one storefronts.One score each.

ShelfMark scores real e-commerce sites on the 29 public-page checks that decide whether a shopper can find a product, trust the store and buy it. Nothing is estimated: every point on this page links to the page it was observed on. Vol. 1 covers Michigan, from Detroit distributors to Upper Peninsula makers.

    The index

    Every store, every pillar

Sort by any pillar, filter by segment, or search. A pillar score is the share of its checks the store met, counting only what could be verified from public pages. Click a row for the full report card.

    Findings

    What the data says

Six patterns across the index, each computed from the 609 observations behind it. The pass-rate chart shows which of the 29 checks Michigan stores fail most often.

    Pass rate by check

Share of stores that fully met each check, worst first. The lighter segment adds stores that partly met it. Unverified observations are excluded from the rate and counted on the right.

    The evidence

One card per store, in rank order. Each pillar row shows its checks as squares: filled = met, half = partly, empty = failed, dashed = unverified. Open a card for three strengths, three fixes in priority order, and the observation behind every score.

    Method

    How a score is built

Five pillars, weighted by how much they decide a sale. Twenty-nine checks, each scored 2, 1 or 0 against a fixed definition, or marked unverified when a public page could not show it.

    Pillar weights

      pillar % = verified points ÷ (2 × verified checks)
      ShelfMark Score = Σ (weight × pillar %) ÷ Σ weight, over pillars with ≥1 verified check
      coverage = verified checks ÷ 29 · confidence: High ≥ 26, Medium 20–25, Low < 20
      grade: A ≥ 85 · B ≥ 70 · C ≥ 55 · D ≥ 40 · F below
      • Public pages only: homepage, robots.txt, sitemap, one category, two product pages, contact or about. No logins, no purchases.
      • Unverified never counts for or against a store. A client-rendered page or a bot challenge earns a U, not a guess.
      • Structured data (F7) is unverified for 20 of 21 stores because served HTML rarely exposes it to a fetcher; it stays in the rubric for hands-on audits.
      • Scores describe a snapshot on 28 Sep 2026. Stores change; corrections and re-audits are welcome.

I audit storefronts the way this index was built: every check scored against a fixed definition, every score tied to the page it came from, and the three fixes that move the number most. Email me and I will send your report card.

ShelfMark is the rubric I use on real jobs, published so anyone can check the work. The scoring model is a spreadsheet: type 29 scores for any store and it returns the pillar percentages, the ShelfMark Score and where the store would rank. I am open to full-time e-commerce and webmaster roles.
