carhartt.com · Digital shelf review · September 2026
The shelf is strong. The data underneath it isn't keeping up.
Carhartt's storefront has one of the best product-discovery systems in workwear — warmth ratings, deep fit and weight taxonomy, industry shops. The gaps are almost all product-data and merchandising-hygiene problems: empty categories in the New tree during Fall Layering, duplicate facet values, attributes leaking into product names, and a badge slot that hides the one thing a fall shopper needs. All of it is fixable by a site merchandiser in a quarter.
Prepared by Mousa Batarseh as an unsolicited work sample for the Digital Site Merchandiser role. Based only on the public site as it rendered on Sept 15, 2026. No internal data, no Carhartt assets or logos used.

Keep doing this
Before the fixes: the parts of the digital shelf that are ahead of most apparel sites. These are the systems the findings below should be built on, not replaced.
Warmth rating is a real merchandising system
Chips at the top of jacket PLPs (Warm → Extreme Warmth), “Rated Warm/Warmest” tile badges, a Warmth Rating facet, and “Warmth Rating Earned: Level 1” at the top of every PDP description. One attribute, four surfaces, consistent language. This is the spine of fall merchandising.
Taxonomy shops the way tradespeople think
Fit (Relaxed / Loose / Slim), weight (Lightweight / Midweight / Heavyweight), Big & Tall, Plus, Shop by Industry (Construction, Farm & Ranch, Mechanic, Electrician, Medical), Shop by Warmth Rating. Facet-as-category done right, and it earns long-tail search traffic.
Storytelling inside the grid
“Aisle invader” content tiles sit in the product grid (“Outwork the rain — Shop rainwear”), so seasonal stories run where people are already shopping instead of only in a hero.
Sale presentation is honest and scannable
Original vs. Now ranges on tiles, color-count “+ N” cues, and a 24-up grid with “See 14 more” instead of infinite scroll. Nothing hides the price story.
PDP fundamentals are in place
Detroit Jacket: 4.2★ from 1,322 reviews, 223 Q&A, Regular/Tall size architecture, True Fit sizing, five product images, a “Built to Last” guarantee block. The trust content exists — it just isn't surfaced upstream yet (see F-08).
Legacy seasonal URLs are canonicalized
/c/women-new-spring-jackets and /c/women-new-rain-gear both resolve to the current Women's New Outerwear node. The redirect discipline is there — the destination is the problem (see F-01).

Women's New Outerwear shows 0 items in the New nav — during Fall Layering
The “New” menu has a Women's branch. Its outerwear node renders an empty grid, with two legacy URLs redirecting into it. A second empty category (men-insulated-bibs-coveralls) is still in the XML sitemap while the live equivalent lives at a different slug with 8 products. Both pages show search-error copy on a category page.
captured · /c/women-new-outerwear · breadcrumb: Home › New Clothing & Accessories › New Women's Clothes & GearWOMEN'S NEW OUTERWEAR — 0 items — No matches found for: "women-new-outerwear" — Check the spelling of the search term you entered.
captured · /c/men-insulated-bibs-coveralls (in Category.xml) vs /c/men-insulated-bib-and-coveralls (in nav)0 items vs 8 items — same intent, two slugs, one dead.
Impact
Women's is a stated growth segment and this is the newness door for it. Google also has an indexable “0 items” page in the sitemap.
Fix
Assign the current women's outerwear launches to the node today. Then: a weekly “zero-product category” report from the catalog, an empty-state that falls back to the parent category (prototype P-3), 301 the dead slug to the live one, and drop it from Category.xml.
Effort
Hours for the assignment; one sprint for the report and empty-state template.

Facets · PIM · Search
Facet values are split by punctuation and spelling
On Men's Jackets & Coats the Technology facet lists the same technology twice with a different delimiter. Lining has four names for one taffeta quilt. Fabric has “Polyester” and “100% Polyester.” New & Featured has a typo and carries fabric values that belong in Fabric. Every duplicate halves the count a shopper sees and doubles the clicks to filter.

Impact
Filter abandonment and under-counted technologies on the page where Rugged Flex® and Rain Defender® are the reasons to buy.
Fix
A controlled vocabulary per facet in the PIM (one value, one spelling, “Name: Benefit” format), a bulk normalization pass on the affected attributes, and a monthly facet-value diff so new launches can't reintroduce variants. Prototype P-2 shows the before/after.
Effort
Merchandising + PIM only. No storefront code.

One badge slot per tile — “New” hides the warmth rating on the newest fall jackets
Tiles show exactly one badge. When a jacket is New, Exclusive, Sale, or Steady Rain, its warmth rating disappears from the shelf. On the 24 tiles captured from Men's Jackets & Coats, 10 show no warmth signal — including this season's Montana Ranch Coat, Elkhart, and Fairbanks launches, the products the Fall campaign is pushing.
Warmth is the primary decision attribute in Q4; the shelf goes quiet on it for the products with the most marketing behind them.
Fix
Two badge slots: status (New / Exclusive / Sale) top-left, warmth top-right, with a priority rule so nothing stacks past two. Prototype P-1 shows the tile.
Effort
One tile-template change + a badge priority rule.

Product data · Naming · URLs
Attributes are leaking into product names and URLs
A warmth rating that belongs in an attribute is appended to some product names, so it reaches the URL slug, the tile, the title tag, and the feed. Trademark symbols alternate between ® and ™ on the same technology. Women's names carry a “WOMEN'S” prefix inside the women's category; men's don't. The Detroit Jacket has three different names depending on where you meet it.
captured · one product, three namesPLP: “Iconic J01 Duck Detroit Jacket” · PDP H1: “Carhartt J01 Men's Iconic Duck Blanket Lined Detroit Jacket | Carhartt” · image alt: “Carhartt Iconic J01 Duck Detroit Jacket”
Impact
Ugly slugs and titles in search results and shopping feeds; inconsistent brand marks; harder product matching for reviews, feeds, and analytics.
Fix
A one-page naming convention (Series · Technology · Fabric · Silhouette; no attributes; ® on the first mention only), a PIM validation that blocks “rating” strings in names, and a cleanup of the affected styles with 301s.
Effort
A day of data work, a template fix for the H1 suffix.

PDP · Cross-sell · Seasonal
The Detroit Jacket PDP recommends “Warm Weather Essentials”
While the homepage says “Stock up on layers that have no off-season,” the flagship fall jacket's second recommendation rail is Force tees, a Sun Defender™ polo, and a short-sleeve logo tee. The first rail (“You May Also Like”) is fine and even cross-sells into bibs. The second one is a seasonal rule that wasn't retired.

Impact
Lost attach rate on the one PDP with the most traffic in the season.
Fix
Retire the rail; replace with a “Complete the layer” rail keyed to warmth rating (base layer → hoodie → this jacket → insulated bib). Put a seasonal expiry date on every manual rec rule. Prototype P-4.
Effort
Merchandising rule change; no code.

Facets · Taxonomy
“Product Type” mixes four dimensions that already have their own facets
On jackets, Product Type offers Duck and Denim (fabric), Fleece and Sherpa (lining), Rain Jackets (protection), Insulated / Lined (lining again), Lightweight (weight), plus the actual silhouettes — Active Jacs, Coats, Softshell. Fabric, Lining, Rain Protection, and Warmth Rating each exist as separate facets, so shoppers see the same choice twice under different names and results don't add up.
Product Type = silhouette only (Active Jac, Chore Coat, Ranch Coat, Shirt Jac, Vest, Parka, Softshell, Pullover). Fabric, Lining, Rain Protection, and Warmth carry the rest. Re-map values in the PIM; the facet order becomes Warmth → Product Type → Size → Fabric → Technology.
Effort
Attribute mapping; a few days with the data team.

PLP · Social proof
Ratings live on the PDP but never reach the shelf
The Detroit Jacket carries 4.2★ from 1,322 reviews. The PLP tile shows none of it, even though a “Top Rated” sort exists. Shoppers comparing 38 jackets get price, colors, and one badge — not the signal that decides most apparel purchases.
captured · PDP vs PLP tilePDP: 4.2 out of 5 · 1322 Reviews · 223 Questions | PLP tile: name · price range · swatches · one badge · no rating
Fix

Assortment · Tagging · Women's
Fall categories look thin in ways that smell like tagging, not assortment
Men's Lined Sweatshirts & Hoodies holds 3 items during a layering campaign. Women's Jackets & Coats holds 19 vs. 38 for men, and its first two tiles are shirt jacs — which have their own category. Men's Insulated Overalls includes an insulated pant. Either the products are missing, or the attributes that route them into these nodes are.
An attribute-coverage audit for the fall nodes: every SKU in the season's buy checked against lining, warmth, silhouette, and gender-category assignment. Fill gaps before Black Friday.

Content · Quick filters · QA
Quick-filter chip groups are mislabeled on some categories
The chip bar on Men's Rain Jackets is titled “Warmth” but contains Cold, Rainy, Cotton Duck, and Lightweight. The same template on Jackets is labeled correctly. It reads like a content block copied between categories without a QA pass.
captured · /c/new-men-rain-jacketsWARMTH — Most Popular · Cold · Rainy · Cotton Duck · Lightweight
Fix
A launch checklist item per category: chip label matches chip set. A content QA pass over the ~40 categories using this component.

Category naming · SEO
URL, title tag, and H1 disagree on what a category is
/c/winter-sale returns a page titled “Limited Time Deals” with an H1 of “Pants & Accessories Sale” (466 items). The insulated-bibs node is “Insulated” in the nav, “Men's Insulated Overalls” as the H1, and “Insulated Bibs & Coveralls - Mens Insulated Bibs & Lined Coveralls for Men” as the title. Shoppers arriving from search see one name, then another.
captured/c/winter-sale → title “Limited Time Deals” → H1 “PANTS & ACCESSORIES SALE” · /c/men-insulated-bib-and-coveralls → nav “Insulated” → H1 “MEN'S INSULATED OVERALLS” → title “Insulated Bibs & Coveralls - Mens …”
Fix
One name per node, propagated to slug, H1, title, and breadcrumb from the PIM; stop reusing evergreen slugs for rotating promos — give promos their own /c/promo-… nodes with an end date.

Top seasonal queries land on a results grid, not the category
Searching “insulated bibs” returns correct products with Men / Women / Kids chips — good — but no route to the curated Insulated Overalls node, its warmth chips, or its facets. The “Products you may be interested in” block below the results is a fixed set of four styles that doesn't reflect the query.

Sort · Newness
No “Newest” sort on a site that merchandises newness everywhere
Sort offers Relevance, Top Rated, Price ↑↓, Name ↑↓. New is a facet checkbox instead. The New menu, New Colors, Just Added, and “New for …” nodes all exist; the grid can't be ordered by them.

Template details that cost trust with Google and screen readers
Badge images use their file names as alt text — a screen reader hears “Warmth underscore Rating underscore 1” and “ProductBadge underscore New” instead of “Rated Warm.” The PDP H1 includes the “| Carhartt” title suffix. The Product JSON-LD description contains a literal “Description” label and “ ” entities. The category meta description spells the brand's own technology “water-repellant.”
Human-readable alt on badge images (“Rated Warm, level 1”); strip the title suffix from H1; clean the description field before it's serialized; copy fix on the meta.

What the fixes look like

Rule, not a hand-pick: for any outerwear PDP in Sept–Feb, show base → mid → this item → bottoms, choosing the top seller in each slot at the same fit and a warmth rating ≤ the jacket's. Manual rails get an expiry date so “Warm Weather Essentials” can't survive into September again.

How this was captured
What I looked at
Homepage, the full navigation tree (392 unique /c/ links), and Category.xml from the sitemap index.
12 category pages including Men's Jackets & Coats (facets, sort, 24 tiles, badges), Women's Jackets & Coats, Men's Rain, Lined Hoodies, Insulated Overalls, Force, New Women's, Low Stock, Winter Sale.
One PDP end to end (Iconic J01 Duck Detroit Jacket): H1, JSON-LD, images, size architecture, recommendation rails.
Site search for a top seasonal query (“insulated bibs”).
robots.txt (Algolia crawler allowed, search and query parameters disallowed).
Limits
Public site only, one day, one region (US), desktop and narrow viewports. No analytics, no inventory, no launch calendar — so counts like “3 items” are observations, not verdicts.
“Not shown on tile” means the badge slot was taken; the product almost certainly has a warmth rating in the data.
Every quote in the findings is verbatim text or attribute values as rendered. Nothing was fetched from Carhartt's CDN and no brand assets are reproduced.
